Johannesburg - Reports that two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwa are not true, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

“There is nothing like that. We are still investigating... the reports are untrue,” Brigadier Neville Malila said.

The SABC reported on Wednesday night that two people had been arrested.

According to the public broadcaster, the two were being held for questioning after they were arrested in Nongoma, in northern KwaZulu-Natal. They were reportedly arrested following a tip-off by members of the public.

Meyiwa, who was also the Orlando Pirates captain, was shot dead in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting his girlfriend, singer and actress Kelly Khumalo, on Sunday night.

The attackers apparently demanded cellphones and money. One cellphone was stolen.

According to The Star newspaper, Khumalo's friends received WhatsApp messages from her cellphone number on Monday asking for financial assistance.

In the messages Khumalo reportedly claims to have been arrested for speeding on the highway and said her bail was R3100.

She then asks her friends to pay a detective Sello the amount via e-wallet.

Malila said this was “highly unlikely”.

He said Khumalo's cellphone and those of the other witnesses who were present when the shooting took place were in the police's possession until Wednesday.

He urged those who alleged that they had paid money after receiving the messages to go to the nearest police station to lay a charge.

“Those [dockets] will be added to the investigations.”

Meyiwa's funeral will be held in Durban on Saturday. - Sapa
