Johannesburg - A police warrant officer and a constable were shot dead at the Johannesburg central police station, Gauteng police said on Saturday.

A 31-year-old man, arrested for possession of dagga, pulled out a firearm after resisting a search by the officers at the police station on Saturday night, said spokesman Colonel Noxolo Kweza.

“He refused to be searched after he was brought to the station. He then pulled out a gun and shot one of the officers, the other was also shot as he tried to hide,” Kweza said.

The armed man shot himself and died at the scene.

One officer was aged 31, while the other was in his 40's, said Kweza.
