Leerust - A councillor was arrested on Tuesday for conspiring to murder North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo and Mahikeng Executive Mayor Gosiame Seatlholo, the Hawks said.

The 42-year-old woman was arrested in Mmasebudule village, Leerust, in the early hours of Tuesday morning, spokesman Paul Ramaloko said.

The woman had approached a traditional healer in the village on November 21 asking for assistance in killing Mahumapelo and Seatlholo using muti.

The traditional healer reluctantly agreed to help the woman. He then informed the police of her intentions on November 28.

She was arrested on Tuesday during her second consultation at the traditional healer's kraal at the village.

She would appear at the Lehurutshe Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The premier's office expressed its shock over the arrest.

“The Office of the Premier has learned with shock about the arrest of suspect/s on charges of conspiracy to kill Premier Mahumapelo...”

It thanked the SA police service for taking swift action on the matter.

“In the meantime, we would like to assure members of the public that Premier Mahumapelo is safe and is continuing with his normal official duties.

“We call on members of the public to remain calm, and allow the police and the justice system the space to deal with this matter and bring it to its logical conclusion.”
