Durban - The wife of an eThekwini Municipality councillor had her chain ripped off her neck after directing her husband into a parking bay in Dr Pixley kaSeme (West) Street on Wednesday.

Andre Mitchell, 68, the councillor for Queensburgh (Ward 63) and his wife, Hannie, 64, had stopped near a surfing shop when the drama unfolded.

“I was reversing the car into a parking space in front of the St Moritz building in John Milne Road. Hannie got off and stood behind the car to direct me in safely. Once I was done, she stepped off the pavement and stood at the back of the car to get something from the boot,” he said.

Three teenagers walked up to her and one of them pulled the gold chain from behind.

A tavern owner called the police, but by then the robber had fled.

Surf shop owner, Mike Lamont, called it yet another brazen CBD robbery.
