Johannesburg - Two children aged 4 and 2 were found abandoned on Wednesday in Motloulela village in Mecklenburg, Limpopo police said.

The discovery by police and social services personnel followed a complaint that the two children were inside the house crying and without food, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

It appeared the children had been abandoned for some time.

“The whereabouts of the mother nor relatives are not known at this stage,” Mulaudzi said.

“The two will be accommodated at a place of safety pending further police investigations.”

Elsewhere in the province, a 21-year-old woman appeared in the Motetema Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for alleged child neglect.

The case was postponed for further investigation to January 14, 2015, with the woman released on R500 bail.

She was arrested at Mooihoek, Motetema, on Saturday night, after allegedly locking her two children, aged 2 and 3, inside the house, so she could go partying at a nearby tavern.

“The children have since been removed to a place of safety by social services,” said Mulaudzi.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Fannie Masemola was deeply distressed and disappointed with such incidents, just days after the launch of the 16 Days of Activism campaign for no violence against women and children.

“Any abuse and neglect of children will not be tolerated,” he said.

“Combating crime and the scourge of women and children abuse remains the government's priority and anyone who crosses that line will face the full might of the law.” - Sapa
