Nelspruit - A man was arrested for allegedly hacking his father to death with a spade in Kwaggafontein on Tuesday, Mpumalanga police said.

The 56-year-old man was attacked while he was on his way to work around 5am, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said.

He died on the scene. His 26-year-old son allegedly locked himself in a room after the attack.

“When the police asked why he killed his father, he indicated to the police that his father owed him money for maintenance,” he said.

“His statement was taken as a confession to the murder and the man was arrested.”

Mohlala said the blood found on the man's clothes and the spade would be sent for forensic testing.

“It is unbelievable and shocking what has happened, that the suspect has hacked his father to death.

“We truly believe that families should protect each other. However, in this instance the opposite took place. I also take this opportunity to thank and appreciate the diligence of the community for assisting the police.”

The man was expected to appear in the Mkobola Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
