Durban - The police have issued a warrant of arrest for a 47-year-old man in connection with the deaths of four children who were run over by a road grader in Ndwedwe, near Verulam.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said police were looking for the man, believed to be a foreign national, and appealed to anyone who had information on his whereabouts.

Four counts of culpable homicide, reckless and negligence driving and failing to stop to render assistance after the incident are being investigated.

The man, whose name is known to the Daily News, was employed at Aqua Transport and Truck Hire in Westmead. Company spokeswoman Sagree Gounden said attempts to locate the man had failed.

Zwane said the firm had provided police with his personal details.

Three of the children – cousins and members of the Magwaza family – Hlengiwe, 11, Zanele, 4, and Busisani, 2, died at the scene. Langelihle, 4, died in hospital.

They were run over while on their way home from crèche.
