Cape Town - Honeymoon murder accused Shrien Dewani did not behave like a concerned husband when he reported to police that hijackers had driven off with his newlywed wife, a police sergeant told the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday.

According to him, Dewani did not even ask what the police were doing to locate Anni Hindocha, Sergeant Cornelius Mellet testified.

Mellet was called as a State witness in the trial in which Dewani stands accused of orchestrating the murder of his wife while they were on honeymoon in Cape Town on November 13, 2010.

Dewani claims that he and Anni were hijacked, that the robbers let him go and drove off with Anni, who was later shot dead.

Mellet told the court that Dewani was neatly dressed and clean, and added that he could not see how Dewani could have been in a robbery without having a scratch on him.

He spoke to Dewani while they drove from the Harare Police Station, where Dewani reported being hijacked, to the Cape Grace Hotel.

He said that Dewani was eager to get to the hotel, but was unable to explain why there was such an urgency on his part.

He spoke to Dewani as they drove to the hotel to try and establish what had happened and to obtain a description and registration number of the vehicle used and suspects involved.

During the drive, Dewani came across as tense and nervous, he said.

He added that he felt sorry for Dewani when he noticed that he was sweating and he turned on the air conditioner.

When they arrived at the hotel, Dewani went to his room, while he viewed CCTV footage to establish the registration number of the taxi that picked up the couple.

The details he found on the video footage was sent to the police station.

The trial continues.
