Johannesburg - A man was arrested for allegedly abusing his girlfriend and her 10-year-old daughter in Diepsloot, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

“The suspect reportedly locked up the young victim in a shack in extension two. He pushed her against the corrugated iron structure, punched and beat her with a broom stick,” Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela said.

The 28-year-old allegedly assaulted the mother, 26, resulting in a deep cut on her head.

He allegedly told the victims not to tell anyone about the abuse and accompanied them to the doctor, where he lied about their injuries.

The woman reported the abuse on Monday and the man was arrested in the evening. He would face charges of child abuse and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He would appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
