Durban - A disciplinary process will be held into whether a high school teacher encouraged two pupils to fight at a Pinetown school earlier this week, the KwaZulu-Natal education department said on Thursday.

“We learnt about it through the media yesterday (on Wednesday). We are now in contact with district officials. A disciplinary process will soon follow,” spokesman Isaac Luthuli told Sapa.

Isolezwe reported on Wednesday that a teacher at Nilgiri Secondary School in Pineview, Pinetown, had encouraged two grade 11 pupils to fight.

When they refused to fight one another he apparently slapped them.

The incident was recorded on a cellphone.

“We want to send a strong message to teachers. We expect teachers to groom students into leaders and help learners discover their talents. Violence is a talent we are not looking for,” Luthuli said.

“If it is true that the educator was involved it will mean this educator lacks (those qualities). We do not condone any violent behaviour.”
