Johannesburg - The police investigating the murder of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa are following up on fresh leads, including new DNA evidence, which might link suspects to the crime.

Meyiwa was gunned down on October 26, while in the company of his musician girlfriend Kelly Khumalo and her friends at her home in Vosloorus, East Rand.

Khumalo family members and their visitors who were present when Meyiwa was killed have been questioned again as the investigating team tries to get to the bottom of the murder. However, the requestioning of witnesses has failed to yield any new information so far.

National police spokesman Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale on Saturday said he wanted to assure the public that police were focused on solving the crime.

It was 263 days since Meyiwa was murdered but Makgale said there was no way the police would let the Meyiwa murder investigation become a “cold case” and would continue to look for new evidence.

Police sources told The Sunday Independent that fresh leads, including newly-obtained DNA evidence, could be used to link suspects to the Meyiwa murder.

The soccer star was murdered in cold blood in the presence of at least six people.

However, the identikit of the suspect which was constructed with the help of the witnesses closely resembled a person well-known to the Khumalo family, who lives in their neighbourhood.

Sources with inside knowledge of the investigation say the police have not ruled out the possibility that there had been a deliberate attempt to mislead their investigation, although it was difficult to prove that at the moment.

The investigative team working on the Meyiwa murder was concentrating on the case and “nothing else”, according to police.

“The police are encouraging members of the public who might have any information regarding the murder to come forward.

“Investigations are ongoing and we will not rest until the suspects are brought to book,” said Makgale.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or text Crime Line at 32211.

A reward of R250 000 – which is the highest the police can issue – for any information leading to the successful prosecution of Meyiwa’s killers, is yet to be claimed.
