Durban - A dog rummaging through rubbish in a park found a foetus and brought it home, apparently thinking it was a meal.

Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said Rajoo Rampur, 50, was outside his house in Queenspark Crescent, Phoenix, when he saw a dog pulling something from the park to the road.

“Upon inspection he noticed it was a decomposed body. A case of murder was opened for investigation at Phoenix SAPS. No arrests have been made,” Naicker said.

Rampur told the Daily News he was on his sister’s driveway when he saw what appeared to be meat in the dog’s mouth.

“I thought it was a piece of meat or frozen chicken. Normally people throw rotten food into the bush nearby. I bent down to pick up a stick so I could scare the dog into dropping it,” Rampur said.

Still baffled, he thought it was a toy doll and so tried to pick it up with the stick and throw it in a bin.

“I looked carefully at it and realised it was a foetus. It was badly decomposed but I could see hands and a leg. I have two children of my own aged 21 and 26. This incident has left me traumatised. I don’t think I will sleep tonight,” he said.

Rampur suspects the dog found the foetus near a stream where he had seen the dog earlier. The dog belonged to his neighbour.

Phoenix Ward 51 councillor, Patrick Pillay, called for an investigation.

“We have family planning centres in the area. I urge women and men to attend them and seek help…,” Pillay said.
