Durban – A 34-year-old man arrested for allegedly raping and strangling two people in the Drummond area near Durban, has been released, the National Prosecuting Authority said on Tuesday.
NPA spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said that the prosecutor at the Camperdown Magistrate’s court declined to prosecute the man due to insufficient evidence.
On Monday, police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said that the man was arrested in Hillcrest after he was linked to the murders with the help of DNA sampling.
On Tuesday though, Zwane admitted that the man had not been “linked to these murders with the help of DNA sampling”, but rather that DNA samples had been taken and that police were still awaiting the results.
Ramkisson-Kara said that initial information on Monday of the man appearing in court and being denied bail had been confused with another case, and the man had never in fact appeared before a magistrate.
