Johannesburg - A man allegedly fled an accident scene after colliding with a vehicle with four occupants, including a child. He was transporting furniture.

After the accident, he allegedly abandoned his smashed bakkie at the scene and fled.

By the time the police and paramedics arrived on the scene, the driver of the other vehicle was nowhere to be found.

The accident took place at about 10.30am on the M1 near Gold Reef City on Sunday.

Petros Moyo and a helper had moved a client from Freedom Park and were taking her in his bakkie to her new home in Hillbrow. Moyo’s bakkie was filled with furniture and clothes.

Moyo said he was driving at 80km/h in the slow lane when he heard a loud bang and felt an impact on the side.

His vehicle flipped, rolled several times and landed on its side, facing oncoming traffic. Petrol and oil leaked out and the shattered windscreen had a big hole in the middle.

Moyo said the other driver took off. “There were three people in that car, and after the accident, the driver ran away.”

The police took statements from the abandoned car’s two remaining passengers.

After the crash, Moyo’s client’s furniture lay scattered. Her plasma TV was shattered and her wardrobe and cupboards were in pieces.

The microwave was without its door. The fridge, washing machine and bed were a mangled mess.

The woman’s asylum papers were blowing in the wind, and her and her daughter’s clothes were strewn on the grass.

ER24’s Russel Meiring said one person was hurt and two had minor injuries.
