Cape Town - The US marketing executive found murdered in a room at a Camps Bay boutique hotel this week, identified as Gabriela Kabrins Alban, apparently died after a sex and drugs session that went wrong.

The Daily Mail reported police as saying she was found with about half a kilogram of cocaine in her room, and that a 41-year-old suspect, a Guatemalan citizen, was picked up wandering semi-naked on a nearby beach.

It is believed the two were a couple.

The US embassy on Friday confirmed the identity of the 39-year-old murder victim, and extended condolences to Alban’s family and friends.

Embassy spokeswoman Cynthia Harvey said all efforts would be made to assist the family of the dead woman.

“The Department of State takes its obligation to assist US citizens abroad seriously, and stands ready to provide all appropriate consular services,” said Harvey.

She said “out of respect for the privacy of the family”, the embassy would not disclose any further details.

Police approached by Weekend Argus were tight-lipped about how Alban died, but the Daily Mail reported that Alban was the victim of a horrific sexual assault using a curling iron.

The report said police believed the pair travelled to Cape Town together, and were in town for a possible drugs deal.

Alban was found dead in the hotel room about 3pm on Wednesday afternoon at the luxurious Camps Bay Retreat.

Hotel director Roelof Troskie confirmed she had been booked in at the Chilworth Road retreat, but would not provide further details except to say that they were “waiting for the initial report from the Camps Bay police”.

Police spokeswoman Noloyiso Rwexana said the suspect had been arrested in connection with the murder, and was expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court.
