Drugs worth R750k seized in Beaufort West

Cape Town - Two suspects were arrested for the possession of drugs with an estimated value of R750 000 in Beaufort West on Tuesday, police reported.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said: “Members were busy with routine vehicle checks when they pulled over a passenger bus that was en-route to George from Johannesburg in Donkin Street, Beaufort-West at approximately 04:45 this morning (Tuesday, 19 May 2015). During the search that ensued, they found a sports bag in the luggage compartment that contained fifteen (15) packets of tik and five bags filled with Mandrax tablets.”

The drugs, including 1.5kg of tik and 5 000 Mandrax tablets, were confiscated and were scheduled to be sent to the police’s science laboratory for analyses.

“The two suspects, a 36-years old Nigerian national and his 17-years old South African female accomplice are scheduled to appear in the Beaufort -West magistrates’ court tomorrow (Wednesday) for the illegal Dealing/Possession of drugs (Tik and Mandrax).”

Both were currently being detained at the Beaufort-West police holding cells pending their first court appearance.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Maj Genl Thembisile Patekile said: “Provincial management has put a stern warning to potential drug pedlars to refrain from transporting these drugs as they will be caught and brought to justice as these arrests is testimony of.”
