Eastern Cape -The Eastern Cape provincial police commissioner on Thursday welcomed the sentencing of a 41-year-old man convicted of murder and attempted murder.

“Contact crimes especially those involving women and children is a SAPS priority and [we] will continue to work hard to put those guilty of these types of crimes behind bars,” said Lieutenant-General Celiwe Binta of the South African Police Services (SAPS).

The Aliwal North Regional Court last week sentenced 41-year-old Mandla Eric Liwani to 20 years imprisonment for murder and an additional 10 years for attempted murder. The sentences would not run concurrently.

In August 2010, Liwani stabbed two victims, a man and a woman, at a soccer field in Aliwal North, Eastern Cape. The 17-year-old female died at the scene while the man sustained multiple wounds and was admitted to a local hospital for treatment.

Within 48 hours of the crime, police arrested Liwani.

Bintao commended the unit responsible for the arrest, the Maletswai detectives, “for their swift and thorough investigation of the case”.

Liwani would appear in court again on September 1 on two further charges of attempted murder.
