East London - Eastern Cape police on Thursday called on the public for help in locating two suspects who wounded an off-duty police officer in East London on Wednesday.

“Captain Ngxovu was shot in the lower body by one of two suspects. Both the suspects fled the scene. Police appeal to anyone who can assist with information that can lead to their arrest,” said Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci.

Ngxovu spotted “two suspicious looking men” outside the Oriental Plaza in East London. One of the men was holding a firearm.

Ngxovu followed the suspects as they drove away. While approaching the vehicle, one of the occupants opened fire, shooting Ngxovu in the lower body.

Both suspects fled the scene.

Ngxovu was taken to hospital and was reported to be in a stable condition.

“A case of attempted murder has been opened. At this stage, we cannot speculate the cause of the shooting,” said Soci.

Anyone with information that would lead to the suspects’ arrest to contact Warrant Officer Nqenani on 071 600 8842, or through Crime Stop on 08600 10 111, or Crime Line 32211.
