Johannesburg - A State witness on Thursday denied naming murder accused Lindray Khakhu in his statement to police following the murder of Alton Mooi in 2013, the High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Palm Ridge, heard on Thursday.
Ronald Williams, a former police officer, was being cross-examined by Khakhu's lawyer, Sog van Eck, in Afrikaans.
Williams told the court that on June 17, 2013 he heard gunshots while standing outside the G-Spot shebeen in Westbury, Johannesburg. He ran towards the sound and saw a young man who looked like Khakhu running past him carrying a firearm.
Khakhu, 22, is on trial for, among other crimes, shooting Mooi dead in June 2013.
When submitting his statement at the Kliptown police station, Williams said he did not use Khakhu's name as he only knew him by his nickname, Papas.
Van Eck asked him how Khakhu and Mooi's names appeared in his statement if he did not mention them to the officer.
Williams said the officer taking down the statement filled the names in himself as he only knew Mooi as Altie.
Khakhu is on trial on 18 charges, including the murder of three-year-old Luke Tibbetts, attempted murder, pointing a firearm and illegal possession of a firearm.
He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Tibbetts was shot in August last year while sitting on his mother's lap in a car, when Khakhu allegedly shot at another car whose occupant, Keenan Mokwena, he was allegedly aiming at. Mokwena was wounded.
