Johannesburg - The businessman who allegedly impersonated a Western Cape MEC to escape a reckless driving charge has failed to appear in court. Again.

Mcebisi Mlondzi was arrested in Joburg in January after allegedly being caught driving at 207km/h in a 120km/h zone. He refused to stop for the metro police, resulting in a chase between his gold Bentley and the officers, who cut him off on Corlett Drive.

He claimed to be Western Cape Public Safety MEC Dan Plato. He was originally set to appear in court in January, but did not arrive, with the metro police claiming at the time he had applied to appear at a later date.

His bail, granted shortly after his arrest, was revoked on Wednesday – albeit provisionally – because he had not arrived in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court.

His lawyer told the court that Mlondzi had missed his flight the previous night from Port Elizabeth.

The presiding magistrate did not look impressed, but postponed the case to April 15 as the State had not completed its investigation.
