Durban - The family of slain Winterton restaurateur, Rajoo Grewan, have welcomed the conviction of two men responsible for his murder.

Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Thoba Poyo-Dlwati on Tuesday convicted Nhlanhla Gumbi, 36, and Siyethemba Mfeka, 20, of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. The two were acquitted of the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Grewan’s sister, Anne, said the family was satisfied that the men were found guilty and now awaited the outcome of sentencing.

“We want justice for my brother,” she said.

Grewan, 41, who ran a restaurant on his Sophia’s Rust smallholding in Winterton with his wife, Philile, was shot on the night of June 7 last year after being attacked by two gun-wielding men.

He was confronted by his killers minutes after picking up Philile from a church service at his mother’s home.

Grewan’s home was just a few hundred metres away from his mother’s home.

The assailants held the couple at gunpoint, demanding cash. Grewan, who was also armed, struggled with the gunman and was shot in the neck after a violent scuffle.

His shooter stole his firearm and the assailants then dragged Philile into the house where they again demanded money. They then left in Grewan’s bakkie, taking Grewan with them, and dumped him in the mielie plantation bordering the property.

Still alive and struggling to survive, Grewan dragged himself back onto the road, where he was found by his sister, Anne. Grewan was rushed to hospital, but later died.

Gumbi and Mfeka were arrested in July last year. They pleaded not guilty to the murder and robbery, but Poyo-Dlwati found that the State had proved its case against them.

Argument in mitigation and aggravation of sentence will resume on Wednesday.
