Johannesburg - A case of child neglect was opened by Springs police after the death on Monday of two out of four children found in a locked car in Hanson Street, Strubenvale.

The children were 6 and 4 years old. The surviving 20-month-old and a 5-year-old are in a moderate to serious condition.

Netcare 911 said when they arrived on the scene two of the children were already dead. The other two were treated on the scene before being taken to hospital.

Netcare 911 spokeswoman, Santi Steinmann said family members were having lunch in the house. The children were playing outside and likely locked themselves in.

Warrant Officer Tommy Tomlinson from the Springs police said the matter was still being investigated.
