Durban - A Richmond sugar cane farmer shot dead a man who had broken into his home on Sunday night.

According to police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, the suspect and five others allegedly tried to gain access to the property at Sunnyhill Farm armed with a garden implement, believed to be a slasher, when farmer Mally Thompson was alerted to his presence.

Police sources indicated that Thompson’s sleep was disturbed by the sound of a window being broken and then burglar guards being removed.

A source close to the investigation said Thompson investigated the source of the sound and discovered six men trying to get into his home. He then went to his bedroom to fetch his firearm.

Upon his return, he saw that the group of six men had entered the house.

Thompson then allegedly fired two warnings shots, to no avail, and shot the suspect when he attempted to lunge at Thompson.

The 30-year-old suspect was shot in the face and died on the scene. The other five suspects fled and are still at large.

Police investigations continue.
