Johannesburg - A truck driver charged with culpable homicide for the death of a man and his son during a collision in Potchefstroom is still in police custody after failing to pay his bail, North West police said.

Paulos Sithebe, 31, appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court on Thursday. The Free State man's bail was set at R3000, Captain Pelonomi Makau said.

“He can't pay the bail so he is still in custody.”

The matter was postponed to November 28 for further investigation, she said.

A 30-year-old man and his young son were killed on Tuesday afternoon and three others were injured in a crash between their bakkie and Sithebe's truck on Parys Road.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said at the time paramedics and provincial fire services arrived on scene and found that a wrecked bakkie lay beneath a large truck. Five people were trapped within the mangled bakkie.

The man's wife was critically injured and two other children sustained serious injuries.

Meiring said the children were aged three months and 10. The three were transported to Potchefstroom Hospital, but the woman was later transferred to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Makau said.

It was alleged the collision was caused by the truck making a U-turn on the road. - Sapa
