Johannesburg - Two alleged robbers have been arrested for housebreaking and theft in Kagiso, near Roodepoort, after being assaulted by residents, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

The two were arrested and admitted to a local hospital around 10pm on Monday evening, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said.

“The complainant allegedly left her shack on (Saturday) at about 4pm to visit relatives. On (Monday) at about 5am the complainant received a phone call from her sister informing her about the break-in.”

The woman returned to her shack to inspect the damage and upon arriving, found the door wide open and her belongings strewn inside.

“Ten pairs of shoes and a DVD player were stolen,” Sibiya said.

“Neighbours and some members of the community noticed the suspects leaving the complainant’s shack and alerted others. The suspects were chased, caught and eventually assaulted.”

The police were called later and found the two alleged robbers injured and bleeding.

They were in hospital under police guard, Sibiya said.
