Johannesburg - A Danish national appeared in a South African court on Monday after 21 pieces of female genitalia were found stuffed in his freezer, police said.

The gunshop owner was arrested last week in the central city of Bloemfontein.

He will face charges of sexual assault, intimidation and domestic violence.

Police believe the 58-year-old, who they said is wanted in Denmark for illegal dealing in firearms, lured his victims from neighbouring Lesotho, sedating the women before performing illegal operations on them.

Anaesthetics and surgical equipment were found in his home last week along with the body parts.

“Most of the victims were allegedly from Lesotho and investigations are underway to establish how he lured them into the country as well as his motive,” police spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said in a statement.

“It has been established that (suspect), who owns two gun shops in Bloemfontein, is a wanted man in Denmark for illegal dealing in firearms.”

The man will remain in custody until his next court appearance next Monday for the hearing of his bail application.

His name is being withheld (and comments have been closed) because South African laws state that sexual offenders cannot be named until they have entered their pleas in court.
