Cape Town - Police have opened an inquest following the discovery of a man’s body at Mnandi Beach.

Spokesman FC Van Wyk said anglers removed the body from the ocean on Sunday. The cause of death was unknown, and an autopsy had not been completed.

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said the anglers suspected that one of their fishing lines cast out to sea had been caught in kelp.

“While reeling in the line, it was discovered that the body of a man had been entangled in the fishing line. The fishermen managed to pull the body ashore and raise the alarm,” he said.

The body was handed to Forensic Pathology Services.

Meanwhile, NSRI Hout Bay’s duty crew were activated to search for two fishing boats on Monday morning.

Lambinon said NSRI, assisted by Telkom Maritime Radio Services, attempted to contact the vessels on their satellite phones and via Marine VHF radio.

“As our rescue craft was being launched, both boats arrived in the harbour, with all safe and accounted for.”
