Five held for housebreaking, theft

Mthatha - Five suspects were arrested and charged for possession of suspected stolen property, housebreaking and theft, on Monday, Eastern Cape police reported.

Police in Gonubie said the arrests followed after the Crime Prevention Unit followed up leads on house break-ins at Riegerton Park and Quanera.

“Police arrested the first suspect who works as a taxi driver and is believed to have transported the stolen goods from the houses to Mzamomhle informal settlement,” police spokesperson Capt Stephen Marais said.

The stolen goods were recovered and the 27-year-old suspects charged with housebreaking and theft.

Meanwhile, in another incident, the police arrested four suspects on Tuesday, in Mzamomhle, for housebreaking and theft, with the ages of the suspects ranging from 21 – 33 years old.

“Police seized several stolen items in their possession in the Mzamomhle Informal Settlement, Gonubie. Six laptops, one 7kg gas bottle, one sleeping bag containing clothing, two suitcases full of clothing, one CD-tape and radio, one gas stove, one speaker and one subwoofer were recovered,” police said.

The recovered property has been positively linked to the housebreaking.

All the suspects were e expected to appear in the East London Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The Cluster Commander of East London Cluster, Major General Lungile Nqamqele congratulated the members for their quick response and the recovery of the property of the property with a street value of R130 000.
