Johannesburg - Four men and a woman were arrested in Katlehong, east of Johannesburg, on Monday in connection with a string of robberies, a murder and hijackings, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

A stolen firearm, a toy gun, three stolen vehicles, 24

cellphones, several bank cards and wallets were found at the scene, around 6am, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago said.

The metro police had surveyed the men for five days after receiving a tip-off, he said.

“The staking out of the suspects' residences in Katlehong commenced on Wednesday last week and the metro police officers decided to pounce around 6am this morning.”

Two were arrested in Phooko Section - one of them with a girlfriend - and another two in Phadima Section, Kgasago said.

The vehicles - a Toyota Corolla, Toyota Conquest and the VW Golf 5 Ähad been hijacked in Springs, Benoni and Meyerton respectively in August and September.

Investigations were under way to verify their involvement in a string of crimes committed recently in Ekurhuleni, Kgasago said.

The five would appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court soon.

They were all charged with possession of a stolen firearm, ammunition and three stolen vehicles.
