Johannesburg - Five people have been arrested for dealing in illicit cigarettes when they were found in possession of R24 million worth of the contraband in Witbank, Mpumalanga police said.

Police received a tip-off of an illegal transaction on Friday and when they went to investigate, they discovered five large trucks packed with the cigarettes, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

The five drivers, two South Africans and three from Mozambique, were arrested.

The cigarettes were apparently destined for Cape Town.

The five would appear in the Witbank Magistrate's Court soon.
