Mtubabtuba - Five men who allegedly killed a man by assaulting and burning him appeared in the Mtubatuba Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

They would remain in custody until their bail application on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said.

The five men were Komukom Gumede, Justice Stembe, Themba Mdluli, Mziweskosi Ncube, and July Ndlazi.

KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday the five were arrested on Monday after a 20-year-old man was killed at Nkanini.

Colonel Jay Naicker said the five allegedly chased the man at Ezwenelisha around 10pm. He was later found dead at Nkanini.

“He was assaulted and burnt to death,” Naicker said.

“Mtubatuba police were alerted after the incident and when they reached the scene, they found that the deceased was assaulted and burnt.

“The motive of the killing is unknown at this stage. Police at Mtubatuba arrested five men, aged between 26 and 47.”
