Tzaneen - Five awaiting trial prisoners escaped from custody in Ritavi police station near Tzaneen in Limpopo, police said.

Spokeswoman Ronel Otto said the five escaped by cutting through the roof fence of the exercise yard on Monday night.

“Two of them were arrested earlier this morning [on Thursday]. They are on trial for serious offences such as murder, rape and robbery, and therefore very dangerous,” she said.

The five were identified as Lazarus Moseamedi, Stanley Sipho Nkwana, Kgomotso Mokhabudi, Rufus Mkhawana and Dumisani Nukiwe Khosa.

Otto said Moseamedi was on trial for the murder of a police officer and attempted murder of another officer and several cases of armed robbery. Nkwana faced charges of attempted murder, Mokhabudi for murder, robbery and vehicle theft.

Mkhawana was on trial for rape, robbery and assault and Khosa faced a rape charge.
