Johannesburg - Five people died and 50 others were injured on Monday when a bus and car collided head-on near Carltonville, Gauteng, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived on scene and found the bus and light motor vehicle both lying on the side of the Welverdiend Road.

“On inspection, paramedics discovered the lifeless bodies of five women lying inside the light motor vehicle. Unfortunately all five patients had sustained fatal injuries and had already succumbed to their injuries prior to the arrival of paramedics,” he said in a statement.

The 50 patients, mostly children on their way to school, sustained minor injuries and were taken to nearby hospital

The cause of the accident was not yet known.
