Cape Town - Olwyn Cowley, murdered while trying to sell his car using a classifieds website, was shot while in his BMW with two men purporting to be potential buyers, court papers reveal.

Cowley, 21, of Brackenfell, was killed on August 30 last year.

The case made headlines around the country at the time because it emerged Cowley’s murder was linked to him having advertised the sale of his car, a silver BMW, on the classifieds website Gumtree.

Five people - Jason Elias, Shawaal Staggie, Rameez Felix, Soegbudien Abvajee and Tania Majiet - stand accused of killing him. The case is due to be heard in the Western Cape High Court.

According to documents, Cowley had advertised the sale of his BMW on Gumtree. Elias, Staggie and Felix had contacted him about buying the car.

A meeting was arranged by telephone to take place at the Shell garage in Century City at 5pm on August 30 last year.

The court papers state Elias, Staggie, Felix and Abvajee went to meet Cowley.

They said Elias and Abvajee went for a test drive in the car with Cowley.

Elias had been driving. While on the road, he allegedly shot Cowley and later dumped his body on Baden Powell Drive.

Elias allegedly handed Cowley’s cellphone to Majiet at her home in Mitchells Plain. Majiet got rid of the cellphone.

On the Facebook page “In Loving Memory of Olwyn Cowley”, his mother Surita Cowley said she had heard the court case had been postponed again to February 24.

Five days ago on the Facebook page she wrote: “I miss you more than words can ever say.”

She said she had wanted to go through so much with her son, including his wedding.

On the first anniversary of his murder, one friend wrote on Facebook: “Everything is still so unreal. Miss you and think of you lots. Tomorrow we again celebrate the good times that we had with you. Xx.”
