Durban -

A man fleeing from a crime he had committed, apparently using a toy gun, was run over by a truck and killed on the N2 in Durban on Thursday.

Motorists were greeted by the gruesome sight of body parts lying on the road near the King Cetshwayo (Jan Smuts) Highway bridge.

According to police, a motorist from Chesterville had pulled over to the side of the freeway after his car began overheating.

While he was seated in the car waiting for the engine to cool, two men came out of the bushes and knocked on his window.

One pointed a gun at him.

The robbers demanded he unlock the doors or they would shoot him.

The motorist tried to reverse but the car stalled.

They forced open the window on the driver’s side and took the motorist’s phone and wallet. The man grappled with one of the robbers and other motorists, who saw what was happening, began hooting.

When a passerby stopped to help, one of the robbers ran across the busy freeway, but was hit by a truck.

Police found the motorist’s phone on the dead robber. They also found a toy firearm.

The other robber ran into bushes alongside the freeway.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that the unidentified man who was hit by a truck died at the scene.

Sydenham police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and robbery.

Zwane said no arrest had been made.
