Johannesburg - An alleged hijacker has been shot and wounded in Tshiawelo, Soweto, on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

The 21-year-old and another two men allegedly hijacked a truck in the area, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

The incident was reported to police and the flying squad was summoned, who then spotted the truck in the area.

When the men noticed they were being followed, they abandoned the vehicle and tried to run away.

However, police fired shots and wounded the 21-year-old in his thigh. He was taken to hospital where he remained under police guard.

One of the other men, aged 30, was arrested and would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon, said Makhubela.

The third man managed to escape and was still at large.

The truck, as well as a firearm were also recovered.
