Johannesburg - Four people were arrested after they were found in possession of over 2 000 cartons of contraband cigarettes in Pretoria, Gauteng police said on Monday.

Members of the police flying squad received complaints about two Toyota vehicles driving recklessly along Church Street on Monday night, said spokeswoman Lt Col Katlego Mogale.

“The members rushed to the scene, where they observed two vehicles driving at high speed. The vehicles drove over a stop sign and the members pulled them off. Upon searching the two vehicles, they found 2302 cartons of cigarettes,” she said.

The cigarettes were allegedly destined for Midrand from Mokopane in Limpopo, said Mogale. She said the vehicles, a double and a single Toyota cab were reported stolen in Brackendowns and Haartebeespoort respectively.

The four were expected to appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of possession of illegal cigarettes and of stolen vehicles.
