Durban - Four people are expected to appear in the Empangeni Magistrate's Court on Wednesday in connection with the kidnapping of a 39-year-old businessman, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

After closing his shop on Saturday the businessman went home and while waiting at the gate he was allegedly approached by the group, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

“At gunpoint they forced him into their vehicle.

“They also attempted to take his vehicle but were not successful and drove away with him.”

The four allegedly demanded money from the man's family for his release. The family then contacted police.

The group was arrested in Empangeni on Monday and found in possession of 508 suspected stolen cellphones.

They were arrested for kidnapping and attempted hijacking.
