Cape Town - Ten youths who appeared before the Athlone Magistrate's Court on various charges were denied bail on Wednesday, Cape Town police said.

The 10 males, aged 15 to 20, would remain in custody until their next appearance on October 14, Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said.

They appeared on charges of assault, house robbery and malicious damage to property.

The youths, who were believed to be part of a gang, allegedly broke into a house at midnight on Sunday and assaulted an elderly couple believed to be the parents of a rival gang member, he said.

The rival gang member stabbed one of their members to death.

“When they arrived at the house they broke windows, destroyed furniture and groceries, assaulted an elderly couple and also robbed them of their belongings,” Kinana said.
