Johannesburg - The head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Maj-Gen Shadrack Sibiya, was suspended on Tuesday afternoon, his lawyer said.

“He received his suspension notice about two hours ago,” Victor Nkhwashu said just after 5.30pm.

“I will be consulting with him this evening and receiving instructions.”

He said Sibiya had made an extensive response to his second suspension notice, received on Wednesday.

Nkhwashu confirmed the suspension was related to Sibiya's alleged involvement in facilitating the illegal rendition of Zimbabweans in November 2010.

The Hawks could not immediately be reached for comment.

An application to get reasons behind Sibiya's first notice of suspension was struck from the roll of the Labour Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday morning.

This was after this notice of suspension was withdrawn last Tuesday night.
