Limpopo - Violet Montjane* is unemployed and went to school only up to Grade 6.

The Mankweng Sexual Offences Court advised the 21-year-old Limpopo woman on Tuesday to consider sterilisation so that she could stop having more babies.

She appeared in court on a charge of child neglect.

In 2012, she let her one-year-old baby crawl onto a tarred road during a fight with her boyfriend.

This led to the woman’s grandmother laying criminal charges against her.

On Tuesday, Montjane told the court that she had two babies, but the eldest had died.

The child she abandoned on the road now stays with her grandmother.

But the court withdrew charges against Montjane on Tuesday because her grandmother had decided to drop them.

Before he withdrew the charges, magistrate Patrick Cloete had a word of advice for her: “I advise you to consult your doctor and sterilise.”
