Johannesburg - A 70-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping his seven-year-old granddaughter in Dutywa, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

“The allegation is that the mother of the victim sent her daughter to borrow a box of matches... on Sunday... at about 6.40pm at Ntshingeni location, Sinqumeni village, Dutywa,” said Captain Jackson Manatha.

“When the victim delayed from coming back, at the house of her grandfather, the mother became concerned and went to the house of the suspect.”

When the mother arrived at the house, she allegedly found the grandfather raping her daughter.

“The mother opened the rape case on behalf of her daughter at Dutywa police station,” said Manatha.

“The Dutywa police acted swiftly as they rushed to the scene... and found the suspect at his homestead and arrested him the same evening of Sunday.”

The grandfather was expected to appear in the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. - Sapa
