Durban - Hundreds of protesters converged on the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court in Durban on Monday to demand that the grandmother of a dead two-year-old girl be denied bail.

There was a heavy police presence at the court, with officers controlling access to the court.

The 55-year-old grandmother was arrested on Friday after her two-year-old granddaughter was declared dead at their home in Chatsworth's Havenside area.

Protesters from various civilian, religious and political groups were outside the court building, with one group chanting “Bring back the death penalty”.

Many carried placards that read “Stand Up Against Child Abuse” and “Monster Mom Rot In Jail” as well as “Bring Back Death Penalty”.

Numerous television crews and photographers were outside the court while reporters attempted to gain access to Courtroom C to cover the first appearance of the woman.
