Queenstown - A Hawks task team has arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly murdering police official, Sergeant Xolani Sowambi, who was found dead alongside a road in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.

The suspect was arrested in Queenstown on Tuesday and an unlicensed firearm was confiscated, said Hawks police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

Sowambi was allegedly hijacked and killed while en route to work on Saturday, September 5, to start his morning shift, said Mulaudzi.

“His private vehicle was found in Whittlesea following an all-night search by the police,” Mulaudzi said. “Two suspects were seen running away after being stopped by police.”

The Acting Head of the DPCI Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza and the Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta welcomed the swift arrest.

Police were still searching for the other suspect.

The suspect was expected to appear in Queenstown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
