Johannesburg - The deadline for the general secretary of the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) to hand himself over to the Hawks for questioning has been extended to Friday.

Walter Theledi was meant to go in for questioning on Monday in connection with the theft of millions of rand from the union. But Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said he had now been given until Friday.

Theledi returned to South Africa on Sunday after being overseas on union business.

The Hawks want to question him over the disappearance of R7-million from the union’s coffers.

A former financial consultant to the union, Samuel Phaswane, has already been arrested and appeared in court in connection with the disappearance of R136-million over a number of years. Phaswane has been denied bail.

Theledi has up until now, denied that the Hawks want him for questioning.

On Monday he told Independent Media: “I don’t know what you are talking about. I have not been approached by anyone for questioning. They have not spoken to my lawyers either.”

Samwu’s bosses launched an internal investigation into the missing money from the union’s coffers last year. However they have held no one to account after the probe found that no money was missing nor was anyone guilty of financial maladministration.

Although a group of unionists expelled from Samwu continue to allege theft, the union has refused to have an external audit conducted.
