Johannesburg - The toddler who was nearly killed after being abandoned on the N1 highway by his mother remains in a place of safety as authorities work to make his grandmother his foster parent.
The boy’s 19-year-old mother was this week charged in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court with attempted murder and child abandonment. She was denied bail and is to appear in court again on Tuesday.
The 16-month-old baby was rescued by passing motorists and Gauteng traffic police after a truck nearly collided with him on the highway.
Dr Sello Mokoena, a spokesman for the Gauteng Department of Social Development, told the Saturday Star: “There have been cases where the child has been taken away from the mother and given to the grandmother, but then the mother gets the child and kills the child.
“We can’t allow that to happen. We will ensure stringent measures to protect the child and that this mother does not have access to him without the supervision of social workers,” he said.
