Durban - A Durban man was robbed of his car when he stopped to inspect the damage to it after being bumped from behind by another vehicle.

Stanley Oluchukwu said on Monday he had gone for a late-night snack to an uMhlanga restaurant in his red 2008 VW Polo when the incident occurred on Palm Boulevard, on Sunday.

He said one of four men in an unidentified car behind him threatened to shoot him.

“I stopped to check the damage and these guys stopped as well.

“I asked them, ‘why did you bump my car; are you drunk?’

“Then one of the guys just said he’s going to shoot me and got in my car and drove away because my engine was still running,” said the South Beach resident.

“When the other was saying he’s going to shoot me, another one, in the (hijackers’) car, was saying to him he must shoot me. I was scared,” he said.

Oluchukwu’s car was found minutes later, crashed into a fence of a home in Herwood Park, uMhlanga.

The driver, the same man who had threatened him, had apparently lost control and was later arrested.

CCTV footage released by Enforce Security on Monday showed the suspect crash into the fence at speed.

The suspect tried to limp away, but two security guards on foot then emerged and checked the car.

Next, armed guards arrived and chased the man.

Police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker, said four men were involved in the hijacking.

“The suspects allegedly crashed the vehicle in Herold Drive, Herwood Park.

“One of the suspects was arrested while the others escaped,” Naicker said.

Naicker said a 22-year-old man was arrested and was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and would appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon.

Oluchukwu, who runs an internet café in the Durban CBD, said he was stunned at the costs of fixing his car.

“I don’t know what to do. When they said they were going to shoot me, I wanted to collapse because I have a newborn baby to take care of, and now I have to take care of this car and it is expensive,” he said on Monday.

Enforce Security director, Anthony Feuilherade, said one of their reaction officers, Sandile Msebenzi, declined a R1 000 bribe allegedly offered by the getaway driver and arrested the suspect in Portland Drive, uMhlanga.
