Johannesburg - Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr was irresponsible when speeding, he said on Friday.

“I was rushing from Pretoria to a concert in Badplaas, when I was pulled over on the N4 and arrested for exceeding a speed of 160km/h,” the singer said in a statement on his Facebook page.

“I concede this was irresponsible and dangerous.”

Hofmeyr was released on R500 bail and is due to appear in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of reckless and negligent driving and for speeding at 169km/h in a 80km/h zone.

In his statement, Hofmeyr complimented the police officers who dealt with him, describing them as “friendly, professional and thorough. Thanks guys and girls on duty”.

On Thursday night, Hofmeyr wrote on Twitter: “Hier is plek vir net een tronkvoël n hierdie tronksel, Julius. Skuif op vetgat” (There is only room for one jailbird in this cell, Julius. Move over fat ass).”

He was referring to Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema who was also arrested on Thursday evening. He was caught speeding at 215km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 in the Vaal. - Sapa
