Cape Town - A Khayelitsha father says he has lost faith in the police as hopes of finding his five-year-old son Nido Mvango are fading.

Thina Mvango, 39, told the Cape Times Monday that his heart was broken because it has been over a month since he last saw his son, and police had not kept him abreast of their investigations.

The boy’s mother, Asavela Nobele, died early this year. Nido was last seen on September 5. Mvango said the investigating officer had promised to visit the family yesterday, but never came.

“Police are useless,” he said. The last time he heard from the police was when the officer told him they had information the child had been spotted in Milnerton with a middle-aged man, he said.

He had received calls from a person whose voice he did not recognise and who let him speak to a child.

“I have told the police about this. They say they can do nothing about it.”

Investigating officer Wonga Nyangintsimbi said the police followed up on the information that Nido was spotted, but came up with nothing. He would meet Mvango today
