Cape Town - Security has been stepped up for Ses’khona Peoples Rights Movement leader Andile Lili, who is in a stable condition at Tygerberg Hospital after he was shot in what the movement claimed was a “political hit”.

Lili was shot outside his Makhaza home on Wednesday, on the eve of Ses’khona’s march to the Passenger Rail Association of SA and the ANC offices in Cape Town.

He was shot four times and had to undergo surgery.

On Sunday, his brother Mpuchuko Nguzo told the Cape Argus that Lili was in a stable condition. He said his brother had been moved to a ward.

“He is recovering, and is able to communicate.”

Last week, Ses’khona lashed out at the regional ANC, accusing them of attempting to assassinate their leader. The statement was refuted by provincial secretary Songezo Mjongile.

Mjongile said the ANC was shocked and wished Lili a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, Ses’khona spokesman Sithembele Majova said security had been tightened at the hospital where Lili is recovering.

He said the organisation had asked for Lili to have his own police security in the hospital because they feared the perpetrators might return.

“Lili is a State witness in this case and he is the only one who can identify his shooters. We want to ensure his safety above all.”

Majova said the organisation was working closely with the police to ensure a successful conviction and arrest.

“A special investigation team has been assigned to deal with comrade Lili’s shooting. We are sure that if we work with them it will end in a successful arrest.”

The spokesman said Ses’khona members had been asked by Lili’s family “for space” until the family is happy with his recovery.

“We visited him on Saturday, but the family has asked for some space and we understand that fully. We have also asked for no one to be allowed to see Lili without the family’s consent and strictly no cameras are allowed.”

On Saturday, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba visited the hospital to pray for Lili. According to a weekend report only family was allowed in the room during the prayer service.

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said they were still searching for the suspects and no arrests had been made.
